The Gullah People came from various areas of Africa, which included Senegambia, Windward Coast, Gold Coast, Angola, The Bight of Benin, Mozambique, Madagascar, Congo, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and other areas of the continent of Africa. In the Lowcountry of South Carolina, the Gullah people survived the Middle Passage to America as enslaved Africans who were captured from the rice-producing regions of West Africa. In the Sea Islands of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, they lived in isolation.
